Southland Lane was reopened to thru traffic this afternoon. The lane shift at the intersection of 12th Street South and Southland Lane has been adjusted to accommodate additional construction on the south side of the intersection.
The shared-use path on the north side of 12th Street South, from 17th Avenue to 22nd Avenue, is now open to pedestrians. The sidewalk on the south side has been temporarily detoured to support the final phase of the project.
A temporary pedestrian crossing has been installed on the west side of the construction site near the Boys and Girls Club. This crossing will remain in place for approximately three weeks, until the improved crossing at Southland Lane is completed.
Pedestrian and vehicular access to Mickelson Middle School and the Boys and Girls Club will be maintained throughout the remainder of the project.
SD DOT Project Update August 4, 2025
Beginning Monday, Aug. 4 – the final phase of construction will begin on a shared use path along 12th Street South between 22nd Avenue South and 17th Avenue South in Brookings.
This phase of construction consists of upgrading the crossings at Southland Lane and 12th Street South. The closure of the intersection of 12th Street South with Southland Lane will be in place through Friday, Aug. 15.
Traffic will be open on 12th Street South for the duration of the project. During the Southland Lane closure, a vehicle detour will be provided along 22nd Avenue South and 17th Avenue South.
A detour for pedestrian traffic will be provided along the south side of 12th Street South for the duration of the project.
Access to businesses and residents along the project will be maintained with detours during construction.
This project reconstructs approximately one-half mile of sidewalk from 22nd Avenue South to 17th Avenue South, including the crossing upgrade at Southland Lane. The overall project completion date is Friday, Aug. 15., weather permitting.
SD DOT Project Update May 27, 2025
Beginning on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, work will begin on a shared use path along 12th Street South in Brookings. The work will be conducted between 22nd Avenue South and 17th Avenue South. Pedestrian crossing improvement operations will also be conducted at the Southland Lane intersection as part of this project.
Traffic impacts are anticipated to be minimal over the course of the project. Southland Lane at 12th Street South is anticipated to be closed for one month beginning in late July for crews to complete operations.
During the Southland Lane closure, traffic will be reduced to one lane on 12th Street South near the intersection with Southland Lane. A signed detour will be in place to guide motorists around the closure by using 22nd Avenue South and 17th Avenue South. A detour for pedestrian traffic will also be provided along the south side of 12th Street South for the duration of the project.
Access to businesses and residences in the work zone will be maintained throughout the project.
WHAT TO EXPECT MOVING FORWARD
- Changes and disruptions in the project area:
- The intersection of 12th St S and Southland Lane will be closed temporarily. A detour will be provided during the closure.
- A temporary access will be provided for the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center during construction activities near the driveway approach.
- Private driveways will require short term (7 days or less) half-width closures.
- Yard Disruption: Minor
- Sprinkler System Disruption: Possible
- Special Accommodations: Pedestrian access will be moved to the sidewalk along the south side of 12th Street South for the duration of the project.
Overview
Project Description:
This project consists of improving the sidewalk network on the north side of 12th Street S between 17th Ave S and 22nd Ave S to an 8-ft wide concrete shared use path. Button-actuated flashing beacons and crosswalks will also be installed at the intersection of 12th St S and Southland Lane to accommodate pedestrian traffic. This project is funded by a SDDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant and will be administered by the SDDOT.
Why the Project:
This segment has been identified as a needed improvement in a larger effort to provide shared-use opportunities and connectivity throughout the City of Brookings.
