Update: December 1, 2023
20th St S is opening soon! Please read the entire update for important safety information.
This project is not complete; however the roadway has been surfaced and is safe for public travel for the winter season.
20th St S is planned to open on Friday, December 1st, and it will remain open for the winter. Travel with caution: workers will be present in the project area during the first few weeks of December to complete tasks on some sidewalks and boulevards.
Some important notes:
- Mill and overlay between Windermere Way and Main Ave S will resume in Spring 2024, as weather permits.
- An ADA accessible pedestrian route will be provided along the corridor during this time. Sidewalks associated with this project are surfaced and will be available throughout the winter, though some sections of sidewalk from unrelated projects may remain closed.
- Some of the delay in this project came from unexpected conditions during construction that required additional utility work. The utility work was prioritized to avoid future road closures. We appreciate your patience.
Update: October 4, 2023
- Target completion for the project is late November.
- The segment from Windemere Way to Medary Ave S remains closed for roadway construction.
- The segment from just west of Lone Oak Dental to Main Ave S remains closed for utility and roadway construction.
Update: September 21, 2023
20th St S, Starting Monday Sept 25
- From Medary Ave S to west of Lone Oak Dental is now open. Lone Oak Dental is accessible through the normal entrance.
- From west of Lone Oak Dental to Main Ave S is closed. The intersections with connecting side streets are also closed.
- Brookings Vision Center is accessible from Tallgrass Pkwy via Sweetgrass Ln. There is a temporary access point off of Tallgrass Pkwy.
- The segment between Windermere Way and Medary Ave S is still closed.
Update: August 31, 2023
Medary Ave S Intersection Open with Intermittent Closures
- The Medary Ave S intersection has a temporary surface and is open to north- and southbound traffic.
- This intersection will have intermittent closures for various construction activities. Watch for posted signs and detours.
20th St S
- The segment from the west side of Windermere Way to Medary Ave S remains closed.
- The segment from the west side of The Depot to Lone Oak Dental remains closed.
Update: August 25, 2023
32ND St So - Reopened
- 32nd St S – repairs have been made to the sanitary sewer main and 32nd St S been reopened.
20th St So
- The intersection of 20th St S and Medary Ave So is now closed as of Friday Aug 25.
- 20th St S, from Tanbury Lane to just west of Lone Oak Dental, remains closed. Observe posted signs and detours.
DETOUR ROUTE – Fishback Soccer Fields
- Entrance to the Fishback Soccer Field is now only accessible by the south entrance off 32nd St S. Observe posted signs and detours.
Update August 22, 2023
The 20th St S and Main Ave S intersection is now open.
- Due to an unplanned delay, the 20th St S and Medary Ave S intersection will remain closed until further notice.
- 20th St S, from Tanbury Lane to just west of Lone Oak Dental, will remain closed. Observe posted signs and detours.
Update August 18, 2023
- The intersection of 20th St S and Medary Ave S will be closed for sanitary sewer work. This intersection is planned to reopen during the week of August 21-25.
- The Depot will still be accessible via 9th Ave S.
Update August 15, 2023
Starting Tuesday, August 15:
- The segment of 20th St S between Main Ave S and the entrance of Wilmot Estate Apartments will be closed to all traffic. See above map for Detour Route.
- A portion of the eastbound lane between Main Ave S and 7th Ave S will be closed. Eastbound traffic will use the center lane and westbound traffic will proceed as normal. Follow all posted signs, traffic cones, and other markers in the area.
- Main Ave S will remain open for north- and southbound traffic.
Update July 18, 2023
Starting Wednesday, July 19:
- The intersection of 20th St S and Medary Ave S will be closed for sanitary sewer work. This is planned to reopen during the week of July 24-28.
- Only local traffic will be allowed on the segment from Medary Ave S to 7th Ave S. The Depot and Lone Oak Dental will still be accessible.
Update July 14, 2023
Segment from Medary Ave S to 7th Ave S CLOSED
- This segment will close on Monday, July 17th.
- The asphalt in this segment will be milled for later resurfacing.
- This process will take multiple days.
- Flaggers will be present during this process to facilitate access to local businesses.
- After milling is complete, a temporary surface will be placed, and the segment will reopen.
- This segment will close again when utility work begins.
Segment from 22nd Ave S to Windermere Way OPEN
- This segment, including connecting roadways, is now open.
- Proceed with caution: workers are still in the area for final details (striping and cleanup).
Update July 5, 2023
- 20th St S will remain closed from 22nd Ave S to 17th Ave S with two exceptions:
- Pinehurst / Lucerne will allow cross traffic.
- 17th Ave S will allow cross traffic.
- Starting Thursday, July 6, 20th St S will be closed from Tanbury Ln to the Fishback Soccer Park.
- Residents of Windermere Way / Tanbury Ln area only: The segment between 17th Ave S and Windermere Way will be open for local resident access (detour in map).
Update June 29, 2023
Thursday, June 29: Paving from 22nd Ave S to 17th Ave S will begin.
- 17th Ave S intersection will close at the end of the day on June 29.
- Pinehurst / Lucerne intersection will open at the end of the day on June 29.
- Friday, June 30: Paving from 17th Ave S to Windermere Way.
- Once paving is complete, the 17th Ave S intersection will reopen.
- 20th St S will remain closed until final striping and clean-up are complete.
Note: BMU will work with residents adjacent to the project area to repair sprinkler systems damaged during construction.
Update June 6, 2023
- 20th St S is closed to traffic from Tanbury Lane to 22nd Ave S. Access to residents and Bible Baptist Church is being maintained. Traffic can cross 20th St S at 17th Ave S (north/south only).
- Pipe installation is complete from 22nd Ave S to Tanbury Lane.
- Base Course installation is complete from 22nd Ave S to 17th Ave S.
- Curb and Gutter installation is complete from 22nd Ave S to Pinehurst Dr.
- Asphalt paving will start this week.
Update May 19, 2023
- 17th Ave S and 20th St S intersection will reopen by end of day Friday May 19th
- Pinehurst Drive/Lucerne Ave will be closed until paving is complete. (See map above)
- 17th Ave S and 20th St S intersections will be open for North/South traffic only.
Update May 16, 2023
- 17th Ave S intersection will close on Wednesday May 17th to allow for removals and pipe install and then reopen. Estimate closure for 1 week, then reopen with temporary gravel surfacing. (Map above)
- Pinehurst Drive/Lucerne Ave and 20th St S intersection will be open for North/South Traffic Only.
Update May 12, 2023
- Starting Monday, May 15th, after morning rush hour, 20th St S will close from Tanbury Lane to 17th Ave. The intersection of 17th Ave and 20th St S will remain open for north/south traffic only.
- 20th St S is closed to traffic from 17th Ave to 22nd Ave S. Access to Bible Baptist Church is being maintained.
- Pipe installation is complete from 22nd Ave S to Grand Arbor Ave. Pipe installation will continue west towards 17th Ave.
- Road rebuilding has started at 22nd Ave S and is continuing west towards 17th Ave.
Update April 26, 2023
- 20th St S is closed to traffic from 17th Ave to 22nd Ave. Access to Bible Baptist Church is being maintained.
- Removals are complete.
- Pipe installation has started and is complete from 22nd Ave to Bible Baptist Church. Pipe installation will continue west towards 17th Ave.
Update April 12, 2023
On Monday April 17, 2023, 20th Street S will be closed for watermain construction from 22nd Avenue S to 17th Avenue S. A detour for through traffic is planned on 22nd Avenue S, 32nd Street S, and Main Avenue S. Access will be maintained for local residents. 20th Street S will remain closed until further notice.
What to expect moving forward:
- Construction is divided into multiple segments, including a fifth segment planned for late summer.
- The detour route uses 22nd Ave S, 32nd St S, and Main Ave S. The fifth segment will have a different detour route which will be featured on this page at a later date.
Changes and disruptions in the project area:
- 20th St S will be closed in segments. Observe detour routes.
- Temporary mailboxes will be used.
- Temporary garbage collection locations will be used.
- Disruptions to water will occur. Door tags will be distributed in advance to let residents in the project area know when disruptions are soon.
- Private property should not be affected. Boulevards alongside the project area will likely be disturbed and later restored.
Overview
Project Description:
Brookings Municipal Utilities is installing a new 20"-diameter transmission watermain on 20th St S from 22nd Ave S to the water tower on Main Ave S. The gravity sewer on 20th St S from Medary Ave to Tanbury Lane will be upsized from 8" to 10". There will also be road resurfacing (mill and overlay).
Why the Project:
With the population of Brookings steadily rising, this watermain will help provide the water needed to support residents. It will connect to the upcoming new Water Treatment Plant.
