BROOKINGS 2024 CHIP AND SLURRY PROJECT

Project Update September 27, 2024

This project was completed last month. No further disruptions are anticipated.


Project Update August 16, 2024

UPDATE: The City’s 2024 Chip Seal Project has been delayed due to weather and damp conditions. The contractor anticipates completing the chip placement by Saturday, Aug 17 and returning on Monday Aug 19, to start sweeping the chipped streets. After the loose chips have been swept, the contractor will fog seal the street and the “No Parking” signs will be removed. Residents are advised to not park on streets affected by this project until the “No Parking” signs have been removed.


Project Update August 9, 2024

The Chip Seal contractor is planning to start chip sealing next week, 𝗧𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝟭𝟯𝗧𝗛. Please see the map for project streets.


The following is an update to the City of Brookings slurry seal/chip seal project:

  • The slurry seal contractor completed their portion of the project and striping on July 31st. 
  • The chip seal contractor is scheduled to proceed with work starting on August 13th. The chip seal application this year is a new process designed to prolong the life of the seal and will take approximately 6 days to complete, weather permitting. 
  • In preparation for the chip seal project the City of Brookings has placed “No Parking” signs in the boulevards for on street parking in the work area. Parking is prohibited on the street starting on August 13thand ending by the end of day August 17th, weather permitting (See graphic as an example of signage posted in boulevard). Traffic will be temporarily delayed at times during this project.

Project Update August 2, 2024

Public Notice:  The 22nd Ave S segment of the 2024 Chip and Slurry seal project is complete. Please be aware of the new traffic pattern at the intersection of 20th St S and 22nd Ave S. The southbound dedicated left turn lane on 22nd Ave S has been removed. Traffic traveling southbound and turning left heading east on 20th St S will now use the inside combined through/left turn lane.


Project Updates July 25, 2024

(DATE CHANGE)

The following is an update to the City of Brookings slurry seal/chip seal project:

  • The slurry seal contractor is scheduled to proceed with work starting on July 26th. This is one day later than previously stated. This work will last approximately 2 days, weather permitting.  

  22ND AVE S AND 20TH ST S INTERSECTION

  • In preparation for the City of Brookings Slurry Seal Project and the elimination of the dedicated left turn lane on Southbound 22nd Ave S, the City will be making modifications to the 22nd Ave S and 20th St S intersection signal on Thursday July 25 at 3 pm. 


Project Update July 22, 2024

The following is an update to the City of Brookings slurry seal/chip seal project:

  • The slurry seal contractor is scheduled to proceed with work starting on July 25th. This work will last approximately 2 days, weather permitting.  
  • As part of this project, the City plans to re-stripe the northern leg of the 22nd Ave S and 20th St S intersection to better accommodate tractor trailer traffic. See attached plan.
  • Traffic will be open with flaggers on both 32ndAve and 22nd Ave S, with 22nd Ave S being completed at night on both the evenings of July 25th and 26th. The City asks that drivers seek alternate routes on both nights when 22nd Ave S work is being completed. The Brookings Library parking lot will be temporarily closed to traffic and the date for this is yet to be determined. 


What to expect moving forward:

Residents and visitors in the area should watch for temporary signs posted in the boulevards indicating “No Parking”.


Changes and disruptions in the project area:

    

Chip Seal Application  

  • The chip seal process will be different from years past. Project sequence for the highlighted areas are as follows.

                        –  Roads will be swept of loose chip within two days of the initial application.

                        –  The contractor will apply a fog seal on the street.

                        –  Street will be closed during this application until the fog seal has dried.

  • Parking is prohibited during the entire project duration: observe “No Parking” signs when present. 
  • Flaggers will direct traffic at the ends of each block as work progresses. 
  • Private property and boulevards alongside the project area should not be affected. 
  • After the fog seal for the street has dried the road will be reopened and parking bans will end.

  

Slurry Seal Application

  • The Project sequence for the streets identified for slurry seal are as follows:

                         –  Roads will be closed during the application.

                         –  Once the slurry seal has set up, the street will be reopened to traffic.

                         –  Line painting will occur within two weeks after the road has been reopened.

                             Please expect delays when this work occurs.

  • Parking is prohibited during the entire project duration: observe “No Parking” signs when present. 
  • Flaggers will direct traffic at the ends of each block as work progresses. 
  • Private property and boulevards alongside the project area should not be affected. 

Overview

Project Description:

Various roadways in the central section of Brookings will be refinished with a chip or slurry seal surface. 


Why the Project:

This chip / slurry seal work is part of standard maintenance procedures to ensure road surfaces are kept in working order. 


Estimated Completion:

Completion varies by the roadway. All segments are planned for completion by November 2024.
