November 4, 2024
PROJECT UPDATE:
The Western Avenue South Sewer Interceptor Replacement project is now substantially completed. Western Avenue is completely open to traffic. The Contractor may be in the area for the next few days for final items and clean up. Please be aware of workers and equipment.
October 7, 2024:
PROJECT UPDATE:
- The Contractor will be installing a 36” sanitary sewer main for the next several days. Testing will be conducted in the days following installation.
- ROAD CLOSURE: A portion of 32nd St S will be closed tomorrow, October 8, at 9 AM (32nd St S is west of Western Ave.) The road is anticipated to be open at the end of the day, October 8th.
- On October 8th, the Contractor will reconstruct Western Ave S from Shamrock Ln to Hawaii Dr. This work is anticipated to be completed over the next several days.
- The final gravel surfacing on Western Ave S from 44th St S to Hawaii Dr will start approximately October 18th, 2024.
September 27, 2024:
PROJECT UPDATE:
- The Contractor has completed all underground utility work on Western Ave S.
- Black dirt is currently in the process of final grading in field and ditch along Western Ave S, the entire length of the project.
- The Subcontractor will start reconstructing the gravel road on Western Ave S from Arctic Dr to Hawaii Dr in the next few of weeks.
- There is 4-6” of final gravel left to place from 44th St S to Shamrock Ln.
- The Contractor will continue installation of 36” sanitary sewer in farm field west of Western Ave S. Approx 1500-1600 feet of 36” sanitary is left to install.
September 11, 2024:
ROAD OPENING: Hawaii Dr is now open
September 10, 2024:
ROAD CLOSURE: Hawaii Dr will be closed starting September 11th. Western Ave S is now open to local traffic. Local traffic will need to use W 44th St S to access Western Ave S to Arctic Dr. This road closure will allow the contractor to install the rest of the underground utilities. We anticipate this road closure to last no more than two (2) days.
July 26, 2024:
- The Contractor has completed the installation of sanitary sewer from Wicklow Lane to Artic Drive as of 7/26.
- The gravel road is being shaped from 44th St S and will continue to reconstruct as the projects nears completion.
- The Contractor has indicated that they are still on scheduled and anticipate completing the project by the October completion date.
July 11, 2024:
- The Contractor has completed the installation of water and sanitary sewer in the right-of-way south of Wicklow Lane.
- Sanitary sewer testing will be conducted on the newly installed sanitary sewer.
- The gravel road will be reconstructed between 44th St S and Sunset Lane on Western Ave S and will begin this week (7/8-12).
- Shamrock and Wicklow residents are to access homes from the south from 44th St.
- (This will change back to north access sometime soon)
- The Contractor has indicated that they are still on scheduled and anticipate completing the project by the October completion date.
June 20, 2024:
The Contractor has completed the installation of the sanitary sewer to Wicklow Lane. The Contractor still has dewatering and sewer bypass piping adjacent to the project site. Residents should continue to use caution when driving through the project site. The Contractor has started the installation of the watermain and has completed it up to Sunset Lane. Watermain construction will continue to Wicklow Lane. Once the watermain is completed, the gravel road will be reconstructed to allow for more permanent ingress and egress. The Contractor has indicated that they are still on schedule and anticipate completing the project by the October completion date.
April 14, 2024:
- Road closure begins Monday, April 15th on Western Ave S for Sanitary Sewer Interceptor Replacement Project.
- No through traffic, local traffic only.
What to expect moving forward:
- Construction is currently planned to begin when conditions permit.
- Segments of Western Ave S will be closed during construction. Observe all posted signs and detours.
Changes and disruptions in the project area:
- Intermittent disruptions to sewer service (with notice).
- Road closures on Western Ave S.
Overview
Project Description:
Brookings Municipal Utilities is replacing the concrete sanitary sewer under Western Ave S. Manholes will also be replaced. Construction will begin at the intersection of Western Ave S and 44th St S and proceed north to Hawaii Dr. Once that segment is complete, additional construction will continue west of Western Ave S.
Why the Project:
The existing sewer main is a coal-tar epoxy concrete sewer main, and it is near the end of its useful life. It is being replaced with a PVC pipe.
