Project Update June 6, 2025

 Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) continues construction efforts on Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield and connecting the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave. 

  • Now complete - The open cut installation of raw and treated water lines on the south side of US Highway 14 Bypass near Kibble Equipment and on 33rd Avenue north of the US Highway 14 Bypass is now complete. 
  • In Progress - Construction of 33rd Avenue and reconstruction of Kibble Equipment parking lot are in progress. 
  • Starting -  Open cut installation of raw and treated water lines to begin on the north end of 33rd Avenue and continue west towards Interstate 29. 


Project Update May 23, 2025 

Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) continues construction efforts on Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield and connecting the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave.

  • The final bore and jack under I-29 and the final bore and jack of the project are in progress.
  • Open cut installation of raw and treated water lines has begun on the south side of US Highway 14 Bypass near Kibble Equipment and on 33rd Avenue north of the US Highway 14 Bypass.


Project Update May 9, 2025 

Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) continues construction efforts on Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield and connecting the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave.

  • The first of the two bore and jacks’ underneath I-29 is currently underway and is estimated to be completed by the end of this week.
  • Next week, the final bore and jack under I-29 and the final bore and jack of the project will begin.
  • Tree removal and topsoil stripping have been completed.
  • Open-cut installation of raw and treated water lines has begun on the south side of US Highway 14 Bypass near Kibble Equipment and on 33rd Avenue north of the US Highway 14 Bypass.

* Bore and jack: a trenchless method of installing pipe under existing infrastructure, such as roads or railroads, using a jack and an auger. The jack pushes the pipe through the ground while the auger removes the soil.


Project Update April 25, 2025

Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) continues construction efforts on Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield. This will connect the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave.

  •  The bore and jack* of the raw and treated water lines under the Highway 14 Bypass is complete.
  • Topsoil stripping, stockpiling and tree removal are ongoing.
  • Work for the next two weeks: The bore and jack of the raw and treated water lines underneath I-29 will begin as well as the raw water tie-in to the existing pipeline in the north well field.

Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) continues construction efforts on Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield. This will connect the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave, enhancing water service for homes and businesses north of the bypass.

  •  Currently topsoil stripping is currently in progress
  • Tree removal continues to be in progress
  • The treated watermain has been jack and bored under the Hwy 14B
  • The raw water will be jack and bored next week
  • No other Pipeline work has been done


Project Update March 24, 2025

Spring marks the start of construction season! Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) has begun Phase 5 of the Watermain project, installing a new 16” raw and treated water main from US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield. This will connect the north wellfield to the new water treatment plant on 34th Ave, enhancing water service for homes and businesses north of the bypass.

  Project Updates:

  • Tree removal along the pipeline route is underway.
  • Next two weeks:  Additional tree removal, material and equipment staging, and bore-and-jack operations beneath US Hwy 14 Bypass near Kibble Equipment.
  • Minimal traffic impacts expected.
  • No anticipated disruptions to utilities, mail, or garbage services.

Brookings Municipal Utilities is installing new 16” diameter raw and treated watermain from the US Hwy 14 Bypass to the north wellfield. This will connect the north wellfield to the new WTP on 34th Ave and provide improved water service to homes and businesses north of US Hwy 14 Bypass.
