BMU 34TH AVE S RAW & TREATED WATER PIPELINES

Project Details/Updates

Update November 30, 2023

  • 34th Ave / 34th Ave S is now open for travel. 
  • Travel with caution: workers may still be present in the area to finish tasks as weather permits. 


The next phase of this project is from 6th St to Hwy 14 Bypass, which is currently planned to start in Spring 2024. 


Update October 4, 2023

  • Target completion for the project is early November. 
  • The road is closed to all traffic from 8th St S to 6th St. 
  • Utility construction is complete and roadway construction is underway. 


Update July 28, 2023  

  • 34th Ave S is now open from 20th St S to 8th St S. Use caution as workers will still be present for final details. 
  • 34th Ave S from 8th St S to 6th St is closed. The detour route has been updated as shown above.


Update July 14, 2023  

  • 34th Ave will close from Prince Drive to 6th St. on Monday July 17th. 
  • The segment from 20th St S to 8th St S is currently estimated to reopen before the end of July. 


Update May 12, 2023

  •  34th Ave S is closed to traffic from Prince Drive to 20th St S. Business access signage is installed for businesses on 34th Ave.
  • Pipe installation is complete from 20th St S to LG Everist Driveway working north. 


Update April 26, 2023

  • 34th Ave is closed to traffic from Prince Drive to 20th St S. Business access signage is installed for businesses on 34th Ave.
  • Removals are complete.
  • Pipe installation has started at 20th St S working north and will continue.


Update April 12, 2023

On Wednesday April 12, 34th Avenue S in Brookings will be closed for watermain construction from 20th Street S to 8th Street S. A detour for through traffic is planned on SD Hwy 324 (217th St), I-29, and 6th Street. Access will be maintained for local businesses. 34th Avenue S will remain closed until further notice.


What to expect moving forward:

  • Construction is divided into multiple segments. 
  • The detour route uses 6th St, I-29, and 217th St. 


Changes and disruptions in the project area:

  • 34th Ave S will be closed until the estimated completion date of June 30th. Observe detour routes. 
  • The next segment (Prince Dr to 6th St) will commence July 15th. 
    • This area will have utility disruptions and temporary garbage and mail locations. More details will be available in future updates. 
    • A new detour route will be used for the upcoming segment. 

Overview

Project Description:

This project is an installation of a new 20"-diameter transmission watermain on 34th Ave S from 20th St S to Prince Dr (Phase 2, shown in map), and then from Prince Dr to 6th St (Phase 3, not shown). The gravity sewer will be upsized from 8" to 18". 


Why the Project:

A new water treatment plant is planned for completion in the near future. This new watermain will connect to the new treatment plant and bring more water to the city. 


Estimated Completion:

Phase 2: Late June 2023

Phase 3: Mid November 2023
