Project Information
Brookings Municipal Utilities is preparing to say farewell to one of Brookings’ longtime landmarks—the 6th Street Water Tower. Built in 1948 by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, the iconic six‑column tower has served the community for more than 70 years.
The 6th Street tower was taken out of service following the completion of the new 4th Street Water Tower. Since that time, the 250,000‑gallon tank has remained empty. Demolition is scheduled to begin on May 11, marking a notable change to Brookings’ skyline and the next step in modernizing the city’s water infrastructure.
Project Description:
Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) is removing the 6th Street Water Tower, including the tower structure, three equipment sheds, remaining cellular equipment, and associated underground piping to fully decommission the site.
Why the Project:
The 6th Street Water Tower has been out of service since the new 4th Street water tower was placed into service in 2019. Its removal allows BMU to eliminate aging, unused infrastructure and maintain the system.
