Project Update: July 31, 2023
- Starting Thursday, August 3rd, various streets are scheduled to be refinished with a chip seal surface in the southwest section of Brookings (west of Medary Ave S between 8th St S and 20th St S)
- The project is expected to take approximately one week to complete
- Weather may impact the project schedule
- Parking restrictions begin Thursday, August 3rd
- Parking in the project area is prohibited from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- This includes all vehicles, motorcycles, boats, trailers, etc. Violators will be subject to towing at the owner’s expense.
- The parking restrictions will remain in effect until the street is covered with chipped rock
- Observe “No Parking” signs posted in the area boulevards
- Use caution when traveling in the area
- Watch for flaggers directing traffic
- Drive slowly and watch for equipment, trucks, and work crews
- Bicyclists and motorcyclists must use extreme caution if traveling in the area
- Residents in the area: help keep the streets dry during the project to ensure the chip seal can properly adhere
- Refrain from overwatering lawns
- Direct sump pumps away from streets

- Contractor will apply a thin layer of liquid asphalt (“fresh oil”) followed by a layer of chipped rock
- Two to three weeks after the chip seal is applied, the City’s Street Division will sweep the streets in the project area
- Watch for signs in the area and future updates
Project Update: July 25, 2023:
- The contractor for the Chip Seal project has given notification they are planning to start August 3rd, weather depending.
- The work should take approximately 1 week to complete.
- Notices on the boulevards will be placed along all streets regarding the dates later this week.
What to expect moving forward:
Residents and visitors in the area should watch for temporary signs posted in the boulevards indicating “No Parking”.
Changes and disruptions in the project area:
- The highlighted areas on the map above will be closed briefly to apply the chip seal surfacing and will reopen immediately after.
- Parking is prohibited during the project: observe “No Parking” signs when present.
- Flaggers will direct traffic at the ends of each block as work progresses.
- Private property and boulevards alongside the project area should not be affected.
- Street will be swept approximately two weeks after the chip seal is applied.
